There are many options open to postgraduate students looking for funding and finance to support their studies.

Postgraduate loans

The below gives information on the postgraduate loans offered by Student Finance England for students commencing in the 2024/25 academic year. If you apply for funding through another national student finance provider (e.g. Student Awards Agency Scotland, Student Finance Wales or Student Finance Northern Ireland), please contact your national Student Finance body for further information, or you can email the Student Funding team at studentfunding@dmu.ac.uk.

Your eligibility for the loan is determined by your circumstances and the course you have applied for.

    Postgraduate Doctoral Loan (Student Loans Company)

    has been introduced for new students who are starting their studies from September 2018 onwards.

    Please note, awarding of a postgraduate loan is subject to you meeting the eligibility criteria, and to ensure you continue to receive the loan, you must remain eligible throughout the course. Your eligibility for the loan is determined by your circumstances and the course you have applied for.

  2. How your student loan will be paid

    Postgraduate Masters students

    After you have been final registered on your programme, the university will automatically confirm your registration to your national student finance provider. Payments are usually received in your nominated bank account 3-5 working days after your registration confirmation has been sent.

    If there is a mismatch between the course details on your Postgraduate Loan Summary and the course that you have registered on, this could result in a delay or non-payment of your Master's Loan. You may be asked to email a copy of the Postgraduate Loan Summary page of your loan approval letter to studentfunding@dmu.ac.uk, to help us to resolve any course mismatch queries. If you have any queries about your Master's Loan either now or in the future, please contact the Student Funding team at studentfunding@dmu.ac.uk.

    Confirmation of registration for part-time returning students is dependent upon remaining on track and successful completion of the required modules in every academic year of your course.

    Postgraduate Doctoral students

    Once you have been final registered on your programme and the Doctoral College have confirmed that you do not receive any Research Council funding, and that your programme of study meets the criteria for funding, the university will confirm your registration to your national student finance provider. Payments are usually received in your nominated bank account 3-5 working days after your registration confirmation has been sent.

    If there is a mismatch between the course details on your Postgraduate Loan Summary and the course that you have registered on, this could result in a delay or non-payment of your Doctoral Loan. You may be asked to email a copy of the Postgraduate Loan Summary page of your Doctoral Loan approval letter to studentfunding@dmu.ac.uk, to help us to resolve any course mismatch queries.

    Social Work students

    Students studying the MA Social Work course may be eligible for a postgraduate social work bursary. For further information on eligibility and up to date bursary rates, please click here to visit the .

    Students in receipt of the Social Work Bursary are not eligible for the Master's loan available from the Student Loans Company (SLC). Those students not in receipt of the Social Work Bursary (excluding the placement travel allowance) must email a copy of their Social Work Bursary Final Notification letter to studentfunding@dmu.ac.uk, before a confirmation of registration can be sent to the SLC.

  3. Postgraduate scholarships and bursaries

    Postgraduate alumni scholarship

    Recent ˽·¿¾ãÀÖ²¿ graduates may be eligible for a tuition fee discount for selected full-time and part-time ˽·¿¾ãÀÖ²¿ taught masters courses via the Postgraduate Alumni Scholarship.

    Leicester Postgraduate Partnership

    ˽·¿¾ãÀÖ²¿ or University of Leicester graduates may be eligible for a tuition fee discount on selected postgraduate taught courses via the Leicester Postgraduate Partnership

    British Federation of Women Graduates

    This organisation offers scholarships to help with ongoing doctoral work e.g. PhD/ DPhil.

  4. Additional postgraduate loans and grants

    Sir Thomas White Loans Charity

    Applicants may be able to borrow up to £10,000 interest-free for 9 years from the for postgraduate study. Applicants must be resident in Leicestershire or Rutland for more than three years and be aged over 18 years old and under 45 years old.

    Applicants may be able to borrow up to £10,000 interest-free for five to 10 years for business, vocational or education purposes from the . You must be aged over 18 and under 45 and reside in Leicestershire or Rutland.

    Educational grants, trusts and charities

    Some educational trusts and charities provide small grants to help towards books, fees or equipment. There are several searchable online Grants databases such as .

    Funds for women graduates

    offer grants towards living expenses for the final year of a PhD or DPhil for UK, EU or international students.

 

˽·¿¾ãÀÖ²¿ Support Fund

The ˽·¿¾ãÀÖ²¿ Support Fund is aimed at home students who have taken out all the funding they are entitled to, yet may require extra financial support.

British Muslim postgraduate students

˽·¿¾ãÀÖ²¿ has partnered with Aziz Foundation to offer scholarships to British Muslim postgraduate students wanting to study at Masters level. Students will need to have secured a place on their course at ˽·¿¾ãÀÖ²¿ and  for the scholarship. Applications are open until 28 March for the first cycle, with a second cycle open from 2 April until 14 June. The scholarships are available for up to three postgraduate students per year, please check which career areas it focusses on.
