Block teaching designed around you

Considered one of the fastest-growing sectors in the creative industries, the esports global market is predicted to grow year on year to generate an impressive £4.4 billion in revenue by 2027. Leading the way in live events production, broadcasting and streaming and content creation, there’s never been a more exciting time to get involved.

Our Esports Production BA (Hons) programme provides a unique, holistic education of esports to prepare you for a range of roles in this fast-moving sector. Beginning by learning about the fascinating cultures and contexts of gaming and esports, you will go on to develop a range of practical and versatile skills across event production, data analytics and broadcast technologies. Each academic year will culminate in a live esports event of your own design.

Thanks to The Leicester Media School’s strong links with industry, you will also have opportunities to enhance your learning through industry visits and guest lectures, and will be encouraged to engage in practical work experience and volunteering with local esports and gaming organisations.

Entry criteria

  • Normally 104 UCAS points from at least two A-levels, or
  • BTEC National Diploma/ Extended Diploma at DMM 

Plus, five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English or equivalent.

Alternative qualifications include:

  • Pass in the QAA accredited Access to HE. English GCSE required as a separate qualification as equivalency is not accepted within the Access qualification. We will normally require students to have had a break from full-time education before undertaking the Access course or
  • International Baccalaureate: 24+ points
  • T Levels Merit

Mature students

We welcome applications from mature students with non-standard qualifications and recognise all other equivalent and international qualifications.

English language

If English is not your first language an IELTS score of 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each band (or equivalent) when you start the course is essential. English language tuition, delivered by our British Council-accredited Centre for English Language Learning, is available both before and throughout the course if you need it.

Teaching

Course delivery is in block mode, which means each 30 credit module consists of a seven week teaching block. It is delivered through a combination of lecture, tutorial, seminar, laboratory, workshop, self-directed study, presentation, screening, demonstration, group and individual projects.

Assessment

A variety of assessment strategies, both formative and summative, are used throughout the course. Assessments fall into two main types; coursework assessments and formal examinations. The coursework assessments include practical reports, computer-based assessments, short tests, case study reports, critiques and oral presentations.

Students are also assessed by formal examinations, which test the knowledge and skills they have developed over the course of the module. There are a variety of formats for the written examinations, including some or all of the following; short-answer questions, problem-based questions, case-study questions and essay questions.

 

 

Facilities and features

Creative Technology Studios

Our multimillion-pound Creative Technology Studios feature industry-standard television, radio, music and audio recording studios, all supported by a team of Technical Instructors with a wide-range of industry experience. 

Our television studio is equipped with Sony broadcast-standard television cameras, Vinten pedestals and Autocue heads; a studio floor and infinity green screen; a full LED lighting rig with projection mapping and Production and Sound galleries. The multi-camera facility enables you to develop industry-standard techniques and practices covering all areas of television production, from camera work, directing and vision mixing, to presenting, sound and live streaming. 

The Creative Technology Studios are equipped with radio studios, broadcasting live to a 24-hour global audience. You will have access to industry-standard facilities built around an audio over IP infrastructure and our offline radio studios that enable pre-production of show content. In the studios, you’ll use software for audio playout, news gathering and listener interaction through social media and telecommunications. 

Our newly refurbished audio recording studios are equipped with a variety of digital and analogue mixing consoles and outboard hardware by SSL, Neve, Lexicon and Universal Audio. When it comes to software, you’ll be spoilt for choice with our range of cutting-edge post-production applications and plugins. Two live spaces are fully equipped with a range of professional microphones, instruments and amplifiers, supplying everything needed to bring your audio productions to the next level.

Library and learning zones

On campus, the main Kimberlin Library offers a space where you can work, study and access a vast range of print materials, with computer stations, laptops, plasma screens and assistive technology also available. 

As well as providing a physical space in which to work, we offer online tools to support your studies, and our extensive online collection of resources accessible from our , e-books, specialised databases and electronic journals and films which can be remotely accessed from anywhere you choose. 

We will support you to confidently use a huge range of learning technologies, including the Virtual Learning Environment, Collaborate Ultra, ˽·¿¾ãÀÖ²¿ Replay, MS Teams, Turnitin and more. Alongside this, you can access LinkedIn Learning and learn how to use Microsoft 365, and study support software such as mind mapping and note-taking through our new Digital Student Skills Hub. 

The library staff offer additional support to students, including help with academic writing, research strategies, literature searching, reference management and assistive technology. There is also a ‘Just Ask’ service for help and advice, live , online workshops, tutorials and drop-ins available from our , and weekly library live chat sessions that give you the chance to ask the library teams for help.

More flexible ways to learn

We offer an equitable and inclusive approach to learning and teaching for all our students. Known as the Universal Design for Learning (UDL), our teaching approach has been recognised as sector leading. UDL means we offer a wide variety of support, facilities and technology to all students, including those with disabilities and specific learning differences.

Just one of the ways we do this is by using ‘˽·¿¾ãÀÖ²¿ Replay’ – a technology providing all students with anytime access to audio and/or visual material of lectures. This means students can revise taught material in a way that suits them best, whether it's replaying a recording of a class or adapting written material shared in class using specialist software.

Our innovative international experience programme ˽·¿¾ãÀÖ²¿ Global aims to enrich studies, broaden cultural horizons and develop key skills valued by employers. 

Through , we offer an exciting mix of overseas, on-campus and online international experiences, including the opportunity to study or work abroad for up to a year.

Media students have visited Prague to explore challenges faced by the media in the Czech Republic and another group got to see some of New York’s most famous programmes being recorded on a tour of NBC Studios. Students also explored how state-run media works in Eastern Europe on a trip to Hungary.

Graduate careers

Esports Production is an industry-focused course which provides you with the technical foundations and practical skills needed to gain a leading role in digital broadcast or social media production across a sectors, as well as experience of branding, live event production and publicity. 

Graduates from this programme could work in a wide range of careers such as event organisers, live streamers and esports coaches. 

Past media students have also gone on to work as graphic designers, video editors and producers, independent video company directors, television presenters and web designers. The companies they’ve gone on to work for include Endemol, Ideal World TV, Lime Pictures, the Guardian, the Telegraph and the BBC.
